As a freed slave, Valerius initially can barely scrape by. His dream of fame and fortune leads him finally to enlist as a gladiator and to be trained under the manager (lanista) Severus. In the gladiator school, he makes friends with Metellus, the veteran of the arena, who protected him from his cruel master and initiated him into the mysteries of Mithras. At last, Valerius is lined up to fight in the games. He graphically describes the preparations, the growing tension in the city, and the excitement among the gladiators.
